Introduction
When used appropriately, Appcues has a really powerful product. But marketing the value of in-app messaging is easier said than done. My goal at Appcues was to show the value of the product by providing users — both potential leads and the general public — a screenshot library of really good (and some bad) UX examples.
Process
I began the project by compiling a massive library of screen-captures from dozens of mobile and web products. The screenshots captured user experiences from all different types of interactions and products, ranging from feature announcements on YouTube, to Duolingo’s mobile onboarding.
Then, I organized the screenshots into categories in Google Drive folders and documented the process for future contributors to RGUX. Once the screenshots were in order, I began to ideate my post formats by running tests on Tumblr. After I had gathered feedback from my target audience, I applied my learnings and began to design the layout of the website in Webflow CMS.
Once I had a working MVP of the website, I began planning for the official launch on Product Hunt by setting stretch goals of 25,000 unique visitors and 1,000 subscribers within the first week. One week after launching, the blog had received over 32,000 unique visitors and had successfully subscribed 1,500 users.
In addition to becoming an essential marketing and sales tool for Appcues (generating about five percent of total marketing leads each month), RGUX was voted the #1 Product Hunt launch from Boston in 2017, and was awarded second place for product of the year in its category.
